3rd Lisbon Winter School for the Study of Communication

From 4 to 7 January 2023, the 3rd edition of the Lisbon Winter School for the Study of Communication will take place, dedicated to the theme "Media and Propaganda", and organised by the Faculty of Human Sciences da Universidade Católica Portuguesa, in partnership with the Annenberg School for Communication, the School of Journalism and Communication, the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and the Faculty of Social Sciences.
The Winter School aims to provide PhD students and junior researchers with an opportunity to discuss central issues in the study of media and advertising with experienced scholars in the sphere of Communication.
Some of the possible topics for presentations are:
- Disinformation and misinformation, fake news and hate speech
- Participatory propaganda
- Propaganda in the context of war
- (International) media and soft power
- Propaganda and foreign policy
- Social media platforms and disinformation
- Fact-checking and other activities designed to counter propaganda
- Media and the spread of fear
- Persuasion, strategic communication and information management
- Relationship between authoritarian regimes and/or populist movements and propaganda (contemporary or historical cases)
- The recreation of history for the purposes of propaganda
- Systems of user interaction on the internet, false identities on digital platforms and the dissemination of propaganda
- Deep fakes
- Propaganda in specific national and regional contexts
- The distortion of science for propaganda purposes
- Propaganda and climate change
- Propaganda and racism
- Propaganda and misogyny
- The role of education in counteracting propaganda
