Maria da Gloria Garcia honoured in new book by UCP Editora

An afternoon "surrounded by friends"! This is how the former Rector of UCP, Maria da Glória Garcia, described the presentation of a book in her honour, which took place on 6 November 2023 and coincided with her 70th birthday.

"Affective leadership and care and orientation towards others" as well as "defence of the environment and care for our common home" were some of the characteristics that Isabel Capeloa Gil, Rector of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, highlighted about Maria da Glória Garcia's personality.

Also present at the session, the Patriarch of Lisbon, Dom Rui Valério, likened the launch of "Studies in Honour of Professor Maria da Glória Garcia" to an "almost prophetic moment".

José Lobo Moutinho, national director of the UCP Faculty of Law, described the honoured woman as "a pillar of our University", while Ombudsman Maria Lúcia Amaral highlighted the contribution of the former UCP Dean to the progress of national legal doctrine.

Closing the session, Professor Maria da Glória Garcia gave an emotional speech in which she "revisited the past", promising to "risk touching the future" as she has always done and guaranteeing that her "path" will continue to be that of writing, just as the last 40 years have been dedicated to research.

The event also included a performance of Maria da Glória Garcia's poem "Freedom is taken seriously through play" by Noster - UCP's Theatre Group.

Present at the session were Manuel Braga da Cruz, former rector of UCP, Manuela Ferreira Leite, former Minister of Finance, Mário Aroso de Almeida, coordinator of the work, who followed the session via zoom, among other personalities.
