UCP Press celebrates World Book and Copyright Day with several initiatives

In the month that marks World Book and Copyright Day, UCP Press organised several events following the publication of seven new works in areas as diverse as law, health, political science and theology.

The online launch event for "The Economy of Francesco: A Glossary to Repair the Language of Economics", which marked the start of the series of presentations, featured an extraordinary panel of international speakers.

The UCP Bookshop, at the University's headquarters in Lisbon, hosted three events in the areas of Angolan Law, Neurology and Criminal Procedural Law, with Porto also hosting the launch of a book in the area of Political Science. The remaining two events were held in partnership with the Institute of Political Studies, with the highlight being the book "Violence against women and gender violence".

In addition to the dozens of people who physically attended the events, the dissemination of the events via live online channels made it possible to reach an even wider audience. By making these sessions available on UCP Press's YouTube channel, the dissemination of the knowledge shared at the events can be extended.

On Tuesday 23 April, World Book and Copyright Day, we remember the words of UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, who said that "books are vital vehicles for accessing, transmitting and promoting education, science, culture and information around the world."

It is impossible to talk about books without talking about copyright, an inseparable whole to which tribute is paid worldwide on 23 April, proclaimed at the 28th General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1995 with the aim of encouraging reading and promoting the protection of copyright.

Like UNESCO, UCP Press promotes equal access to knowledge and works to advance Open Access to scientific information and educational resources, publishing more and more works in eBook format and publicising the books on the Open Books open access portal.

In addition to UCP Press's initiatives, UCP Bookshop is also celebrating this day by offering its readers a 15% discount*.

* discount valid for all books, including novelties and except technical books (promotional initiative under the terms of the fixed book price legal regime)

Católica's new book brings together values and virtues to guide ethical research

In research, ‘there are no taboo subjects, but there are guiding values and virtues that researchers must cultivate,’ introduced Isabel Capeloa Gil, President of the Universidade Católica, at the presentation of UCP Editora's latest book: "Desafios da Ética na Investigação".

The collective book brings together 11 researchers from the most varied areas of knowledge, with the aim of presenting the guiding values and virtues of research that contributes to the common good and the improvement of the human condition.

‘Essential’ in the words of the President, the work, of an ethical and methodological nature, seeks to answer the questions of ‘how you should act’ and ‘how far you can go’, proposing basic principles of action and limits.

According to Mara de Sousa Freitas, President of the UCP's Ethics Commission for Health, coordinator of the work and researcher, it was born out of ‘the need to create a guide to guide the work of researchers’, with the aim of ‘providing concrete answers to researchers’ specific problems’.

Of the most important values for the researcher, she emphasised ‘in addition to integrity, having a greater sense of responsibility’, and for this reason she left ‘the wish that you can always find life scientists’, like Luis Archer, winner of the Tree of Life Award and ‘father of bioethics in Portugal’.

Ana Mineiro, Director of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Nursing at UCP and co-coordinator of the work, sees in this collection ‘the aim of genuinely creating a rich dialogue between all those involved’.

Believing that one should ‘look at research as an act of faith and hope’, Ana Mineiro considers this book ‘fascinating because it discusses the challenges of ethics in a spiral’.

Isabel Capeloa Gil, Mara de Sousa Freitas and Ana Mineiro closed the presentation with a thank you to Apifarma for supporting the funding that made this project possible.
